Typical Signs Of Tonsil Stones

21.03.2012

The tonsil stones are a bunch of food debris, bacteria and other particles that are accumulated in the crevices of the tonsils.  These particles form into clusters and are considered to be calcified materials that are attached to the tonsils.  These are composed mostly of calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, ammonia and carbonate.  Although there are mostly no notable symptoms that can be observed with small tonsil stones, cases of bad breath and certain discomfort when swallowing are generally associated with this type of problem.

When a person has tonsil stones, their usual complain is the discomfort and pain in their throat.  Although a simple tonsil stone may not be dangerous, it can be very irritating.  To solve this problem, there are many ways that tonsil stones treatment can be done.  These treatments can be done at home or in the hospital.  For treatments done at home, these are easy to do because there are no requirements for any form of invasive procedures.  For those treatments done in the hospital, these require a surgical procedure and should be done only by professionals.

A tonsil stone, which is also known in medical terms as tonsillolith, occurs more often in adults.  There are only a few reported cases that tonsil stones happen in children.  This type of health problem usually does not have any common symptoms during its early stages.  Symptoms may start to occur only during its later stages or when the tonsil stones become large.  Also, there are times when a tonsillolith is only known when an X-ray procedure is done.

For larger tonsillolith, the usual symptoms include halitosis, sore throat, white spots in the tonsil area, tonsil swelling and difficulty in swallowing.  There are also cases that when a person happens to have tonsil stones, there is an after taste being experienced and there may be discomfort felt at the back of the throat.  The pain and irritation are usually felt when severe cases of tonsil stones have occurred.  This is because the tonsils have crevices that are prone to growth of bacteria and eventually leading to the formation of tonsil stones.

Many people may experience tonsil stones without them knowing that it is already there.  Mostly, simple cases of tonsil stones are caused by poor oral health.  Although they may develop into large tonsil stones, there is only a small possibility that this might happen.  But in order to be safe, it is important to maintain a good oral health.  Maintaining a healthy and clean mouth through brushing, flossing and rinsing with mouthwash can help prevent severe cases of tonsil stones.
