Treating Severe Periodontitis Through Surgery

21.03.2012

In simple definition Periodontitis can be described as any form of disease which affects the periodontium. Periodontium is the soft tissue surrounding and supporting the teeth to hold in place. These include the gingiva (gum), alveolar bone and the periodontal ligament.  Infection and inflammation of the gum is called gingivitis. Gingivitis condition may develop into advance Periodontitis if treatment is delayed or neglected.

Periodontitis affects and destroys the bone that holds the tooth to keep it in place. The gum starts to recede exposing its root making the teeth and gums sensitive to extreme food temperatures (too cold or too hot). Because bone structure is affected the teeth may become loosen and eventually fall out if not treated early. A visit to your dentist is necessary to assess the condition and may recommend the best technique and methods to cure advance periodontitis problem. For severe cases of Periodontitis, Periodontist perform dental surgical procedures in order to address the condition at its very root cause.

There are many surgical periodontitis treatment available depending on how severe the condition may be. The dentist will get an X-ray to determine and evaluate the level of damage to the bone that supports the teeth.  A procedure called periodontal probing which uses an instrument that measures the depth of deposits in between teeth and gums. As the measurement exceeds 3mm then dentist will determine procedure to address the problem properly. If the tissue surrounding the teeth is damaged and non-surgical methods may not be enough to have it repaired, then periodontal surgery is necessary.

Periodontal surgery is recommended if after thorough non-surgical treatment is done and the condition still persists or worsens. It is just a simple surgery procedure that can be done in the dental clinic and uses local anesthesia. Periodontist who specializes in the treatment for periodontitis (gum disease) will expose the tooth’s root to remove the hardened mineral deposits. As the deposits are removed, tooth surface will then attached to the gum line as it heals. However periodontist may also suggest some post-surgical instructions after the surgery is done.

Other surgical procedures for periodontal disease: For receding gums, the most common treatment is the soft tissue grafting. These come in two different types the connective tissue graft and the gingival grafts. The procedure is by removing good tissue from the palate and attached to the damaged gum to further control the recession.
