Wisdom Tooth Extraction

When I think of Wisdom Tooth Extraction the first thing that comes to mind is chipmunk cheeks. You know, the swollen mouth you get when you have wisdom tooth extraction? That swollen mouth is what I call chipmunk cheeks.

If you’re considering wisdom tooth extraction but you’re worried about a swollen mouth, let me tell you the that the chipmunk cheeks are inevitable, but the swollen mouth doesn’t last that long and most likely the chipmunk cheeks will be kind-a cute.

I’m the oldest of five kids and all of us have had wisdom tooth extraction during our late teen years. Every one of us had the swollen mouth, but every wisdom tooth extraction was successful! And each of us have great oral health and great looking teeth.

Wisdom Tooth extraction was not always practiced. About 30 years ago wisdom tooth extraction wasn’t seen as a necessity, only if the wisdom tooth or wisdom teeth were causing problems. Today, wisdom tooth extraction is just done before the teeth cause any problems.

My mom is a great example of why wisdom tooth extraction should not be overlooked. She lived during a time when wisdom tooth extraction was not part of preventative health measures unless the wisdom tooth or wisdom teeth caused problems. Well, now my mother’s wisdom teeth have their roots wrapped around a major dental nerve and to go forward with wisdom tooth extraction would be to risk having her mouth go numb permanently. If her wisdom teeth continue to grow or move, which most wisdom teeth do, her dental nerve will be disrupted and cause numbness in her mouth. So, either way, my mom’s going to get permanent numbness in her mouth. It’s just a matter of now or later.

A simple wisdom tooth extraction in her late teens, like us kids, would have solved this problem. Unfortunately wisdom tooth extraction was not a regular practice when she was growing up. And because of that her health or personal comfort may be jeopardized.

When I got my wisdom teeth removed I only had three wisdom teeth. The wisdom tooth extraction was more like an oral surgery since my wisdom teeth hadn’t poked through the gums yet, but because my third molars weren’t all the way grown through yet, the wisdom tooth extraction was simpler.

Tooth Extraction Aftercare was the same for me and all of my siblings even though we each had our wisdom tooth extraction done at different facilities. Eating more liquid and soft foods was required as well as swishing around salt-water in our mouth daily to remove food from the wisdom teeth surgical area. The salt-water would also remove bacteria and prevent any problems that bacteria may cause in the tooth extraction aftercare healing. Chipmunk cheeks or mouth swelling can always be improved by regular icing of the mouth by just putting ice bags up to your cheeks and jaw. The dentist will give you specific tooth extract aftercare to you or whomever is going to take you home after the wisdom tooth extraction since you most likely will still have the anesthesia wearing off.

If you are looking in to wisdom tooth extraction, I would recommend the Mayo Clinic or ask your dentist where the best place for wisdom tooth extraction in your area is.
