Wisdom teeth are generally known as the last teeth in an arch – after the molars. Dentists regularly use the phrase wisdom tooth, 3rd molars or eight. These molars usually appear between the ages 17-25 years (sometimes later and infrequently before).
Dentists assumed that because these teeth appear much at a later age when somebody is expected to be wiser than a kid then they should be called Wisdom Teeth. Total numbers of teeth in humans are thirty two thus four of them appear later on and belong to this category. The shortage or loss of these teeth does not hinder the normal daily chewing your food.
A significant difference of wisdom teeth is that they find it more difficult to break through the gums than the other teeth, predominantly in the lower jaw, where the space is less. Eruption of wisdom teeth is sometimes accompanied by local swelling and immense pain. Many times wisdom teeth become difficult due to Impaction, lack of eruption or Caries (advanced destruction of the jaw bone).
An Impacted tooth is a tooth that fails to break through the gums properly, and is fully or partly covered by bone tissue or gum. In this case the teeth have to be removed. The most common evidence for removal of the tooth is pericoronitis – swelling of the gum tissue surrounding the tooth.
If the wisdom tooth is not fully grown, food particles will continuously gather in the gums around the tooth. And whether or not the tooth has fully broken through the gums cleaning these teeth is almost always hard; thus these teeth are much more prone to additional cavities. In this event it must be treated not removed.
Primary symptoms of Pericoronitis: Inflamation and pain of the gums around each wisdom , Bad breath, Issues with opening the mouth, Extraction of Wisdom Teeth
The dentist must thoroughly survey a person’s mouth, collect medical and dental history. History helps the dentist to obtain all information about a patient’s health. Once the dentist has obtained and thorougly examined the Medical history of the patient, he proceeds to X-ray exam.
To do this, the dentist makes 1 or 2 X-rays, and assesses the state of the tooth, its roots and surrounding tissues and bone. After careful analyzation of the patient, the dentist decides whether to remove the tooth or not.
Age indications for removal
There’s no optimum age for removal of back teeth , however , experience shows that the earlier you extract these teeth, the fewer complications can be expected from them. When there’s a serious cause for removal, it’s much better to do it fast. It is best to extract these teeth when the roots of the teeth aren’t yet formed, and the bone surrounding the teeth are not really dense – late puberty or early adolescence. It is important to seek dental care if you happen to have any problems with your Wisdom teeth.
