TMJ, or Temporomandibular Joint Disorder, is a problem with the jaw. This disorder has the capability to happen in the jaw itself or in the joint of the jaw that moves the lower jaw and/or the facial muscles.
The causes of temporomandibular joint disorder has a tendency to be targeted around soreness of the jaw muscle. This swelling can be created by straightforward things like teeth grinding and jaw clenching. Accidents that happen that involve the face, for example car accidents, can also leave the injured party with this disorder. Stress is another cause of TMJ. Folks who are under stress often clench their jaws causing the muscle to tighten and inflame. Osseous rheumatism is another cause of TMJ, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis’s are 2 of the main kinds, both of these may make a loss of cartilage in the joint.
Temporomandibular joint disorder has many symptoms and all are unpleasant. Of course pain in the jaw area is the 1st sign of this disorder but giddiness, severe headaches and ear aches are other signs. Clicking or popping in the jaws are common symptoms that many sufferers protest about. Swelling where the jaw joint is, muscle or facial and mouth, are other well known indicators of TMJ. Revulsion, puking and even a locking jaw are some more signs that be brought on by TMJ disorder.
Seeking assistance from a physician early on is extremely advisable to those that suffer from temporomandibular joint disorder. When severe pain in the jaw joint, or surrounding area occurs line up an appointment with a family surgeon right away. If a locked jaw, closed or open, happens the subject should head to the closest emergency room immediately.
Diagnosis of TMJ generally starts with a list of questions the surgeon asks the patient. This is a doctors way of determining the history of the disorder, such as how long has the clicking or popping noise been happening and how bad the agony is. The doctor will then go on to examine the jaw, teeth and neck. Once the visual examination is finished a set of x-rays or even a MRI are ordered. These tests will examine the joint connecting the lower and upper jaws and the encircling tissue of the jaw.
Treating TMJ tends to involve letting the muscles rest that surrounds the jaw joints. Eating foods that don't need much gnawing, eg soups, bananas, puddings and gelatin will help the muscles to chill. A warm cloth or covered heating pad can be applied the joint areas to help ease some stress in the jaw. Massaging this area is also advantageous to relaxing the jaw muscle. The doctor may prescribe an oral mouth guard if the patient is understood to grind their teeth after sundown. For dreadful TMJ a consultant may inject cortisone into the jaw joint or flush out the joint with a cleansing solution. Implants can also surgically replace existing joints within the jaw. This surgery is typically the last treatment option that any consultant will recommend as it is irrevocable.
