Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction, or TMD, is a disorder which has a vast assortment of symptoms and causations. Symptoms range from popping, clicking, locking of the jaw, reduced mouth opening, headaches, neck pain, ringing in the ears ( tinnitus ), or a bunch of related indicators. Regarding causation, there’s an exhaustive list, with the commonest related to stress ( i.e. Whiplash ), micro trauma ( i.e. Poor occlusion / bite contributing to grinding ), stress ( mental or physical ), postural issues, nourishment, or hormonal fluctuations.
The area of the TMJ is the area of the face that contributes to gnawing, your occlusion ( bite ), and jaw movement. Therefore, TMD compromises jaw pliability and may cause discomfort at rest or during common movements such as speaking, gnawing, or yawning.
The 1st approaches towards addressing TMD should be conservative. One of the few techniques of facing TMD will be addressed in this piece. Please contact an orthodontist or dentist to discover additional information as needed per your condition.
In our practice, our treatment philosophy mixes two phases of treatment. The initial phase incorporates splint appliance care mixed with intensive physical medication modalities ( i.e. Physical / massage doctors ). A splint is a custom made mouthpiece that allows your facial muscles to chill, and many times, for your joint symptoms to abate. The use of this appliance also allows the doctor to better diagnose the causation of your symptoms by telling her or him, for example, if your symptoms are joint related versus muscle related. The second phase of treatment usually involves alteration of the patient’s occlusion ( bite ) via orthodontics, restorative dentistry, or any other necessary treatment depending on the patient’s wants.
Outside of splint care and physical medication, patients must also avoid intense jaw movements like yawning or singing. Additionally, patients should gnaw softer foods and stay away from food requiring incessant chewing or opening movements. Particularly, avoid gum, biting into apples and large sub sandwiches, gnawing ice, and so on. Patients should also avoid keeping their mouths open for lengthened amounts of time ( i.e. Dental appointments )
