The Correlation Between Sjogren’s Syndrome And Dry Mouth

04.11.2011

Did you know Dry mouth and Sjogren’s syndrome has things in common? They both encourage the spread of bacteria in the mouth which in turn causes dental health problems and other health complications. We all know that our saliva contains oxygen that impedes the growth and spread of bacteria in the oral cavities and so washes them away. Clearly without saliva, bacteria can grow out of control and could cause a host of dental problems including gingivitis and periodontal diseases. And, not only that, as you could also loose your teeth in the process if this is left untreated. Aside from that, you would have difficulties grinding and swallowing your food with your dry mouth.

Sjogren’s syndrome, generally speaking, is an autoimmune disease which attacks the healthy cells of the body. It actually attacks the glands that secrete moisture into your eyes and mouth. While it is believed that this kind of disease affects more women than men, anyone can experience this so-called Sjogren’s syndrome but it is still unclear of how you can acquire it. According to research, Sjogren’s syndrome is hereditary or effects of other diseases like lupus, rheumatoid arthritis or cirrhosis. There is no known treatment for Sjogren’s syndrome, but experts often provide cures that mainly focused on alleviating the symptoms of the disease.

Symptoms of the Sjogren’s syndrome may overlap with symptoms of other diseases or with the effects of other medications.  That is why it could easily be misdiagnosed.  However, if you have not taken any medication, or if you do not have any other ailments and you are experiencing dry mouth and eyes, you may have Sjorgen’s disease.  Other notable symptoms include swelling and painful joints, swollen salivary glands, skin rashes, vaginal dryness and persistent cough.  If you experience the following, it is best to see a doctor.  Do not self-diagnose as taking the wrong medication can be very fatal to your health.

Perhaps the best thing to do if you have Sjogren’s syndrome is to monitor your dental health. As dry mouth can often lead to other dental infection and complications, it is necessarily important to practice good oral hygiene so you can keep the bacteria level in check. But, if you are still experiencing discomfort, then maybe you should switch the brands of the oral product you are using. If you have been using an alcohol-based mouthwash, you can try replacing it with an alcohol-free or organic mouthwash. You should also change your fluoride toothpaste to non-foaming toothpaste that is made of natural ingredients.
