Straighten Crooked Teeth Caused By Malocclusion

09.07.2011

When the upper and lower teeth (the Bite) are out of alignment this is called Malocclusion. In a healthy text book case the upper teeth should fit slightly over the bottom teeth with molar grooves aligning with its opposite tooth. When a person has a healthy bite all his teeth are straight and aligned and spaced evenly throughout the mouth . Malocclusion is a common problem and most condition are relatively minor with no dental intervention required.

Malocclusion can be caused by thumbsucking or tongue thrusting during infancy, these habits in early childhood can also effect the development of the jaw line, causing a range of issues including malocclusion. Malocclusion can also be inherited. Basically if we find out our upper and lower jaw sizes are different in size and create a condition of overcrowding for the teeth and create an abnormal bite pattern. Some incorrectly performed dental work can also end up creating problems such as misalignment of teeth. Malocclusion can also be caused through accidents and conditions such as extra teeth, tooth extractions and teeth growing out in unusual directions.

The three most common types of Malocclusion is overcrowding (type1) which means the bite is normal but the teeth appear to be overcrowded. Overbite is the next most common, The medical term is Retrognathism and is type 2 and is a condition when the upper jaw overlaps the bottom jaw. The third is commonly called under bite, medical tem Prognathism (type 3 ) and occurswhen the lower jaw extends out from the upper jaw.

Children who show signs of Malocclusion early e.g as the first teeth start to show the babie may love the pacifier or the bottle which can add to the condition even further. Some children improve over time as the jaw continues to grow through puberty. Early intervention may be the best course of action especially with devices such as the myo appliance designed by Kevin Bourke and available from myoaustralia.com.au that can alleviate the problem with out costly orthodontic expenses. Adults with the condition generally get worse with age. Some of the symptoms of a poor bite are, difficulty chewing food, continually biting the cheek or the top of the mouth, even speech impediments on specific words and consitent pain in the jaw muscles.

Malocclusion can create other dental issues because the misalignment can make it hard to clean the teeth effectively. Mild conditions can usually be rectified using the myo device or cosmetic dentistry. More severe cases may require orthodontic help, or the use of an appliance for extended periods of time. Check out some of the reseach articles on Kevin’s site.

By getting the malocclusion treated the extra strain placed on the teeth and muscles surrounding the jaw will be significantly lessenned. This also reduces the risk of breaking teeth or other mouth related joint disorders..

Dr Kevin Bourke, an Australian dentist, invented the MYO as an oral appliance to improve the quality of the gum tissue. It was introduced to the dental profession at the biannual Australian Dental Convention in 1974 in Hobart.
