Each person has a varied reaction to every medication. Others unfortunately have allergies to some medications. Allergic reactions are then observed which would range from the minimal, like skin rashes to life-threatening such as shortness of breath. A rare medication allergy is on Zoloft, an antidepressant which belongs to the SSRI drug classification. SSRI’s have reportedly the least number of side effects which made doctors to frequently use the drug on their patients. Some doctors slowly desensitize their patient’s Zoloft allergies by reducing the dosage of the medication. Pfizer’s Zoloft Dosage Recommendations however are also given for normal prescription.
What are Signs of Zoloft Allergy?
These signs should immediately be reported to your health care provider and should not be ignored. The following signs should prompt you to seek medical help immediately.
- Rash
- Hives
- Itching
- Severe dizziness
- Difficulty breathing
- Tightness in the chest
- Swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue
How to Treat Zoloft Allergies
In the case of allergies, one cannot say prevention is better than cure because initially, the individual must be exposed to the medication. If the following signs mentioned above are observed, you are advised to immediately stop Zoloft but generally, the approach to drug allergies will be outlined below.
- Mild to Moderate Allergic reactions (Rash, Hives or Itching)
Antihistamine such as Benadryl or Claritin can be taken so the reaction can be temporarily stopped. Calamine lotion can also be applied so further scratching will be avoided. Cool showers and cool compress can be effective in relieving the itch. These symptoms can be manageable at home.
- · Severe Allergic Reactions (Severe Dizziness, Difficulty Breathing, Tightness of Chest and etc.).)
Home treatment is not encouraged in this situation. Being calm during this time will do you good so you’ll know what to do as well as avoid any possible injuries. You are advised to immediately contact your physician or 911 for emergency cases. You can take 2 tablets of antihistamine if you are experiencing the severe symptoms and your physician is not yet with you. If you are having difficulty breathing, you can use bronchodilators such as albuterol or epinephrine if available. If you feel dizzy, it would be best to lie down with your legs raised so blood flow will be towards your brain. Hypersensitivity to the medication is not the only side effect of Zoloft. Other side effects include Zoloft birth defects which is why the doctors will greatly weigh down the pros and cons of the medication before giving it to their patients.
