Esophageal cancer is allegedly one of the adverse side effects of Fosamax, a bisphosphonates drug used to treat and prevent osteoporosis.
Fosamax offers many advantages to osteoporosis patients especially when it comes to bone loss prevention and treatment but recent studies and researches report that it has adverse side effects. All drugs have side effects but this osteoporosis drug is linked to esophageal cancer, a more serious side effect as stated in a report published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
Patients who are currently under Fosamax medication know that it can cause stomach and esophagus problems. Fosamax users for over 5 years and more are more at risk of developing esophageal cancer. To avoid this to happen, patients are advised to remain in an upright position at least 30 minutes after taking the drug.
For the record, there are tens of millions of Americans who are currently taking Fosamax but FDA only received 23 reports of esophageal cancer possibly linked to the drug between its October 1995 debut and May 2008. Of all the reported cases, FDA reveals that there are only 8 deaths.
In a detailed description in one of the reported cases, Fosamax medication is prohibited by a physician to be taken by a patient who had Barrett’s esophagus, one of the symptoms of esophageal cancer. This Fosamax medication prohibition for patients showing the symptom of esophageal cancer is enough evidence to conclude that there’s a link between cancer of the esophagus and bisphosphonate drugs.
The link between Bisphosphonates and cancer of the esophagus are not received well by some experts, but according to reports, Fosamax patients who don’t follow directions properly while taking the drug are suffering from inflammation of the esophagus (esophagitis) which can potentially lead to development of esophageal cancer.
Alleged Fosamax side effects like Esophageal Cancer are not yet completely validated by facts and figures, according to some experts. For them, the data from the reported cases are not complete and it’s not the time yet to make any premature conclusions.
