Pregnancy can be very stressful to a woman, not only to first time mothers but also to those who have already experienced it. Changes in the woman, physical or emotional, are brought about by the changes due to the pregnancy. Pregnant women undergo mixed emotions that can be a reason for depression. A woman may go through different sets of emotion in each trimester. Pregnancy may add undue stresses to a woman that would turn into an anxiety to some. A result of a survey regarding prescription medication has shown that women are likely to be taking antidepressants than male.
With all the emotional rollercoaster that a pregnant woman is experiencing, it’s no wonder why others have turned to antidepressants as a solution. Others may have impaired functionality due to the stresses of pregnancy. One of the leading antidepressants in the market is Paxil. This drug is one of the Category D for Pregnancy Risk Category. A pregnancy risk category D would have human fetal risk upon taking the drug and should be weighed with the benefits in using the drug.
Those taking other antidepressants have lesser risks than Paxil users. Women may have a greater possibility of having a baby with Ventricular or Atrial Septal defects. Taking Paxil while pregnant should be discussed with a physician and not to stop abruptly because there are reports of relapse due to stopping the drug without weaning. Some of the babies require surgical intervention due to their heart defect. Physicians are advised by the FDA to discuss in length the benefits and risks to their patient before prescribing it.
Paxil lawsuit is filed against GlaxoSmithKline by women who have babies with heart defect. If taken in the last trimester of pregnancy, Paxil may have severe side effects on the newborn baby. Having plans of getting pregnant should be aired to the attending physician if one is under Paxil.
