Brushing Your Teeth The Right Way

03.04.2011

Brushing your teeth is probably something you take for granted.  You’ve done it thousands of times, so you probably do it by rote.  The trouble with brushing by rote is that you may be missing some important points of dental care.

Your mouth actually harbors hundreds of types of bacteria.  Some of these are fairly benign.  Others can multiply quickly if left unchecked and develop into serious problems.  A few of these problems include plaque build-up, bad breath and tooth decay.

If you don’t remove all of the harmful bacteria when you brush, they will only continue to multiply.  For this reason, it is critical that you always brush thoroughly.  All you have to do is miss one spot and you may have a bacteria factory on your hands.

Professionals don’t always agree on what part of the mouth to begin with.  Getting into every crack and crevice as scrubbing each tooth, plus gums and tongue, is probably more important than brushing in a particular order.

Certainly the bulk of your effort should be spent on the teeth that you chew with (molars).  This is where most of your mouth’s bacteria reside.  They’re hard to reach, and that’s why bacteria like to linger here where they won’t get caught.

The gums also need a significant deal of attention.  Bacteria also like to hide here, and may cause build up of plaque and gum disease.

An electric toothbrush, such as the 30 Second Smile (read a 30 Second Smile review for more info), can help you do a more complete job of brushing your teeth.  They’re also faster than a manual toothbrush.  Otherwise, use a manual toothbrush and spend a few extra minutes brushing, especially on those back teeth.

Not all electronic brushes are created equal.  Before you purchase one, compare product reviews first.  You’ll be able to find 30 Second Smile reviews and other product reviews on the Internet.
