Bad Breath: Common Myths

24.06.2012

Statistics tell us that up to 85% of people on a Western diet suffer from some kind of bad breath or ‘halitosis’. I first wonder what ‘up to’ really means and according to whom? Might I be right in suspecting that the research was probably paid for by a company looking for ways to boost their sales figures?
Constant or chronic bad breath can bring down your self-confidence and in more extreme cases, cause depression. But it doesn’t need to be like this from this point on if you follow these common-sense recommendations. The first thing you should appreciate that all you’re being told in mouthwash sales ads told isn’t as accurate as they’d like us to believe!
Myth 1: Mouthwash makes bad breath go away. Commercial mouthwashes are sold to us with the promise that they’ll kill oral bacteria and freshen the mouth. Wrong.
Myth 2: As long as you brush your teeth every day you won’t have bad breath. Cleaning your teeth for 45 seconds in the morning and the evening will only mask the long-term deterioration that is from happening. To brush all the surfaces of your teeth efficiently, you need to brush for no less than 3 minutes at least twice a day and include your tongue and cheeks. Just find the time to do it! It’s really worth getting into the habit. To help you, use an egg timer or a three minute piece of music.
Myth 3: Halitosis cannot be cured – only masked! First find out what’s causing it. After you have came up with an effective way to kill the bacteria-producing bad breath (see tips below), stick to this routine to prevent it from coming back. Temporarily masking your bad breath with gum, sprays and mintsmay seem fine for the first hour or so but the truth is the condition then becomes far worse. The sugary ingredients create an environment for bad bacteria to flourish once again in your mouth.
Tips to stop ‘dog’ breath right away
– cut down on or cut out alcohol, coffee, protein-rich foods and alcohol-based mouthwashes. – drink more water, especially if you’re on medication. – whats the best mouthwash for bad breath? Your own saliva! – clean your tongue right to the back with a tongue scraper, the edge of a spoon or even your toothbrush. Brush from back to front and use lots of water to ensure the waste is washed away. – introduce oxygen into your environment. How? Buy some Hydrogen Peroxide (best to get 35% Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide and dilute it to 3%) and gargle (then spit out). Google for accurate dilution suggestions. – start using an inexpensive Blotting Brush (‘Weapons of Plaque Destruction!’) to help eliminate any plaque buildup from your teeth & gums.

From a family of Clydeside Scots, Graeme was born and brought up in Hong Kong. He lived for 35 years there, as well as in Borneo and Indonesia. Intrigued by the way in which the different Asian cultures approach their health and wellbeing, he studied aspects of Traditional Chinese Medicine and became familiar with many other time-honoured healing methods, from the traditional Jamu herbal medicine healers of Java to the body balancing mechanisms of Jin Shin Jyutsu, from Japan. Together with his wife Phylipa, Graeme now runs resourcesforlife.net a natural health business in Chichester, West Sussex and ToothWizards, an oral health initiative to help people achieve a degree of self-sufficiency in dental health.
