It was a misconception that people who grind their teeth have pinworms in the body. It was an accepted belief back then but is no longer true nowadays. Current medicine now knows that teeth grinding in sleep or bruxism is caused by different emotional and physical factors. But these causes are not yet proven facts because there is little evidence about it, however, these are generally accepted in the medical field because they are derived from realistic theories. A Paediatric dentist who knew much about Paediatric dentistry and teeth whitening provided the following information.
Experts believe that tension one of the major causes of teeth grinding; it’s an unavoidable feeling that can come from work, personal relationships or the general feeling of frustration. When this tension is not addressed it tends to build up from within, which in turn causes teeth grinding in sleep. Grinding your teeth may seem like something you do on purpose but it is in fact done involuntarily. Unlike snoring which also happens during sleep and often a result of clogged nasal passages, teeth grinding is not a result of a physical condition but an action triggered by the brain. This subconscious involuntary action has boggled the minds of many experts for many years. Despite its regularity, bruxism is still a condition that is yet to be backed up by scientific facts. But still it is a health condition that is reluctantly treated by trained professionals.
Although teeth grinding often occurs during sleep, some people still grind their teeth even when they are awake. It’s done either consciously or subconsciously and is usually triggered by the feeling of anger or frustration. Bruxism may be triggered by emotions, however, there is another possible cause that takes a different spin on why this condition occurs. Dentists refuse to believe that teeth grinding in sleep is triggered by emotions but attribute this condition to abnormally aligned teeth.
This tries to explain that this condition is caused by a physical abnormality and not by pent-up emotions. Because of the irregular alignment of teeth, they come into contact with each other when a person is asleep, this contact is what triggers teeth grinding. They say that teeth grinding in sleep can also happen as teeth grow, which is why many people who grind their teeth are children aged 12 and below. But professionals can only speculate because the causes of bruxism is yet to be backed up by scientific facts.
