Dental veneers are thin layers of dental porcelain or composite applied to the outer surface of the tooth to make the tooth whiter and more uniform in shape. The process was formed in California for the employment of actors who required non permanent change in the teeth for costumes. The veneers then were pasted on the teeth and are designed to be only non-permanent. But when we have dental veneers done at a dentist today, the porcelain layer is engraved on the tooth surface with hydrofluoric acid which keeps the porcelain in place once and for all. That is, the veneer can last 10 to thirty years till they need to be replaced. Dental veneers can also break or crack, get stained, or wear down because of teeth grinding. But they don't get cavities like natural teeth. Dental veneers made of porcelain are sometimes more durable than that made of composite.
The additional layer of dental veneer makes the tooth bigger, but it could also mold the tooth into a more uniform shape. Crooked teeth can be coated and chiseled to look more even. Rather than having to wear braces for a few years, dental veneers can be a quick fix to more even looking teeth.
Veneers can often be used to fix a chipped tooth or it can be use on nearly all the teeth for aesthetic reasons. Folks who've small teeth customarily have gaps between the teeth that can't be fixed with braces. Openings between teeth can make it difficult to chew food and can be a bother to keep clean and freed from cavities. In which particular case veneers are the best solution for tiny opening teeth.
The difficulty with veneers, aside from the big price, is that many folks who don't need dental treatment get it simply to keep their teeth white or make the teeth look straight. Veneers shouldn't be counseled to younger folks since veneers have a short lifespan. The adhesives and application of dental veneers also destroys the outer surface of the natural tooth. Since the enamel of the tooth becomes penetrable, a young person with veneers will have to keep replacing and fixing their damaged or worn veneers each ten years or so.
Veneers are expensive to have but also costly to maintain. Because of the high price, many dentist offer the service without having the abilities or experience to apply the veneers safely. Veneers in the wrong shape are a disaster and having too large teeth can cause pain in the mouth. The patient may have some difficulty adjusting to the new bite with new teeth and might need 1 or 2 appointments months after to modify the new bite. Patients who repetitively grind their teeth shouldn't be accepted as cosmetic dental veneer candidates, for the main reason that they will destroy their veneers within a couple of months grinding. Many teeth grinders don't know they're teeth grinders because most grind their teeth while they are sleeping. But a dentist will be able to identify a teeth grinder just by taking a look at their teeth.
