Bruxism is the correct term for a condition where a person clenches and grinds their teeth. This often leads to tooth damage and jaw muscle pain. It can affect adults and children but is commonest in adults aged from their mid twenties to their mid forties. It is estimated that up to 10% of people suffer from bruxism.

Bruxism can occur when you’re awake or when you’re asleep. Awake bruxism will have a tendency to just be a clenching of the teeth, while bruxism while asleep also involves grinding of the teeth. Numnerous studies have found links between sleeping disorders and bruxism, the strongest being between bruxism and Obstructive Sleep Apnoea, this is a condition where the individual has regular pauses of breathing during sleep. Stress, anxiety, caffeine, alcohol and tobacco are known to increase the chance of teeth grinding while asleep.

Sadly there’s no cure for bruxism. It is however critical to prevent and defend against the damaging effects of teeth grinding. Oral devices that are worn at night are designed to defend the teeth by covering the teeth with a layer of plastic. The bruxist will then grind the smooth plastic surfaces against one another.

Plastic however isn’t a perfect material for long-term use in the mouth. The bruxists clenching and grinding will swiftly wear the plastic device and it will eventually have to be replaced. Used over a significant period plastic devices can also lead directly to unwanted tooth movements, changing the bite and worsening the issue. In addition plastic devices will become colonized by oral fungi and bacteria and speedily become manky and stinkingstinky.

Recently a mandibular advancement device from Somnowell made of chrome cobalt alloy has been employed to help manage bruxism. Chrome cobalt alloy is a well established material for making the highest quality partial dentures. Chrome cobalt alloy is better than plastic with regards to bruxism for a considerable number of reasons. The most notable being that chrome cobalt does not suffer wear or tear in the oral environment. It can provide two smooth surfaces for the patient to clench and grind. In addition its surface is heavily resistant to colonization by oral fungi and bacteria.
