There are few kinds of pain that will make your life such a constant misery as toothache.
I have only had toothache on one occasion and it isn’t something I ever wish to repeat. There is no escape from the pain. It feels as though your whole jawbone is on fire and the extreme, throbbing agony seems to be in perfect rhythm with your heart beat. Toothache usually happens on the Friday evening of a long weekend when your dentist has just gone fishing. An aching tooth is often the body’s way of telling you there’s a more serious problem somewhere else.
The Main Causes Of Toothache
„To invent an infallible cure for toothache by which it might be immediately arrested, could well be worth as much and more than the discovery of yet another planet.“ Georg Christoph Lichtenberg (1742 – 1799)
There are many different reasons for toothache just as there are many different cures. The causes can range all the way from a problem with the tooth itself or an underlying degradation in the gum, to a a kidney condition, a blocked colon, a problem with the temporo-mandibular joint (joint of the jaws) the ‘chewing ‘ muscles, or many other physical imbalances. Not every toothache has its origins in poor teeth or gums. See the interactive tooth chart (tooth meridian chart) to understand the link between your teeth and other body parts.
People are always looking for a quick and effective relief for toothache. To find that you first need to understand the causes.
The major factors behind toothache include:
– tooth decay or deterioration
– tooth grinding (especially in children) or clenching your teeth (bruxism) causing damaging wear and tear to the enamel
– overuse of tooth bleaching gels with acidic chemicals that harm the enamel
– exerting too much pressure on the gums while cleaning your teeth
– gum diseases, exposed roots and receding gums
– cracked or damaged teeth; poorly done fillings, bridgework, crowns and inlays
– alignment difficulties with your Temporo Mandibular Joint (TMJ – where the jaws meet)
– sinus conditions, especially if the upper molar roots are near to the sinus area ( a ‘sinus toothache’)
– neuralgia (nerve damage)
– influenza; irritations in the ear, nose and throat are all connected
– abscess on the roots of the teeth – large particles of food trapped between teeth
– heart attack: even first signs of a heart attack can feel like toothache
– menstrual cycle
Why The Pain Varies
The various types of toothache range from a dull, incessant ache to the feeling that someone has just put a spike through your eye. If it’s the ‘spike’ you have, even drinking or chewing hot/cold liquids or foods can increase the pain.
What you need to figure out quickly is what is likely to be causing tha pain.
Acute sharp shooting pain comes and goes generally with sensitive teeth, periodontal and root abscesses, tooth decay and receding gums, cracked or broken teeth,
Pulsing agony can be linked with infected pulp or acute tooth or gum abscess.
Chronic pain is usually due to nerve damage (neuralgia), a tooth decay that impacts the nerve
Discomfort while eating is generally caused by tooth decay, acute tooth or periodontal pustule or a fractured tooth, yet the cause could be as straightforward as food trapped between teeth.
Pain on tapping teeth is also an indicator of acute tooth or periodontal pustule or again food trapped between teeth.
Other symptoms can include swelling of gums, fever, distended glands and foul smell or taste.
So don’t ruch to the telephone to book an appointment before you’ve condidered the many possibilities.
From a family of Clydeside Scots, Graeme was born and brought up in Hong Kong. He lived for 35 years there, as well as in Borneo and Indonesia. Intrigued by the way in which the different Asian cultures approach their health and wellbeing, he studied aspects of Traditional Chinese Medicine and became familiar with many other time-honoured healing methods, from the traditional Jamu herbal medicine healers of Java to the body balancing mechanisms of Jin Shin Jyutsu, from Japan. Together with his wife Phylipa, Graeme now runs Resources For Life a natural health business in Chichester, West Sussex and ToothWizards, an oral health initiative to help people achieve a degree of self-sufficiency in dental health.
