In the summer of 1998 I was driving to a local health show in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire when I happened to glance at my teeth in the car’s rear view mirror. That’s when I learned how unforgiving rear view mirrors can be. I was quite horrified at the discolouration on my teeth and surprised that I hadn’t noticed this sooner.
Although I was suspicious of the ingredients, I bought a tooth whitening home kit which I applied on two or three occasions over the following days. The improvement was almost immediate – and gratifying – but I was hugely disappointed when the discolouration returned shortly afterwards. My rapid tooth whitening idea lacked substance. When I first started to look closer at tooth cleaning kits and the incredibly harsh chemicals used in them, I soon learned they’re only masking, not resolving the condition. My concusion? Tooth whitening kits are a scam.
It only took a little investigation to find better and more trustworthy techniques. Artificially white teeth are neither healthy or normal. It’s much the same as dying your hair blonde. The external appearance might be what you want but what lies underneath isn’t at all what you want in your mouth.
Why Teeth Discolour
Teeth are naturally slightly yellow and discolour for numerous reasons. Dentin is a hard, yellow substance that occasionally appears through the enamel, causing the teeth to appear yellow. Other factors affecting the colour of teeth include the use of certain prescription drugs (Fluorides, Tetracycline, Chlorhexidines), over fluoridated water and the chemicals in cigarettes, tea, coffee and many fizzy drinks and foods like betel nuts. These produce a colour pigmentation that stains the enamel. A tooth will also discolour when it is dead.
A rarely considered but perhaps a significant cause of tooth discolouration is the regular use of antibiotics. The ingestion of antibiotics can affect developing milk teeth if taken by the mother while pregnant or during breastfeeding. If the child is given antibiotics up until approximately 8 years old , the permanent teeth could be affected too. This cannot be changed by any sort of tooth whitening process.
Tooth Whitening Kits: Why you don’t want harsh chemical bleaching agents in your blood
Over one million people around the world search for the phrase ‘tooth whitening’ on Google and other search engines every month. Then there are similar searches like ‘teeth bleaching’, ‘teeth brightening’ and ‘tooth bleaching’ and ‘dentist bleaching ‘, adding another three and a half million people all searching for a way to artificial confidence. Small wonder there are plenty of inferior products sold that promise a solution. It’s only a mirage!
The trouble is that their solution will likely contribute to the original problem becoming worse.

From a family of Clydeside Scots, Graeme was born and brought up in Hong Kong. He lived for 35 years there, as well as in Borneo and Indonesia. Intrigued by the way in which the different Asian cultures approach their health and wellbeing, he studied aspects of Traditional Chinese Medicine and became familiar with many other time-honoured healing methods, from the traditional Jamu herbal medicine healers of Java to the body balancing mechanisms of Jin Shin Jyutsu, from Japan. Together with his wife Phylipa, Graeme now runs Resources For Life a natural health business in Chichester, West Sussex and ToothWizards, an oral health initiative to help people achieve a degree of self-sufficiency in dental health.
