When my son had his tongue pierced the lady tattoo artist carrying out the process had over 15 years experience . She said that my son was the first person who didn’t bleed during it! People do bleed (whether excessively or not I’m not sure). Although it all took place some years ago ago my son says he cannot remember having any discomfort or pain . Following the piercing, his tongue became bruised and swollen , making it difficult for him to eat solids for a week or so .
He could remove the metal ball whenever he wanted to. He knew of some tongue piercings closing up after a week but his was fine for a couple of months without having to put the ‘stud ‘ back in. He had the piercing for roughly 4 years. Over this period he noticed that it had caused a certain amount of damage to the back of his bottom teeth by constantly chipping away at the enamel resulting in black staining in the chips (not the yellow that generally comes from drinking coffee or smoking) . He did occasionally forget it was there and bite down on the metal ball damaging his molars while eating food. In the end he said felt unusual when the stud wasn’t it in but he made a decision his teeth were more important to him than a chunk of metal in his mouth that no one could really see! He explained to me that it was one of those things that you do when you’re young but as you mature, it gets less enticing. I had no problem with that. He always believed that if you want to do something, then do it. If you don’t, then don’t . He liked the experience of having a pierced tongue but now he’s done it, he says he wouldn’t do it again!
The Hazards Of Piercing
One less fortunate story is of an 18 year old student who had a tongue piercing carried out. We had got to know his parents well through school . Within weeks of having his tongue stud inserted it had turned septic as he’d didn’t keep the piercing clean. Over the next 12 months this condition deteriorated until he sadly died from septicaemia (blood poisoning). Despite this unfortunate example, there are countless thousands of tongue piercings carried out without any such side effects.
If you or anyone in your own family is considering a tongue piercing, just take into consideration the potential downsides of the procedure. The primary functions of your tongue are for chewing, swallowing and talking . If you carry out these activities with metal or any other kind of metal jewellery on your tongue, you might easily fracture or chip surrounding dental enamel. This could also increase the long term risk of periodontal problems brought about by the barbell metal rubbing against the gums. Barbells have even been known to become loose or unscrewed only to be swallowed and even end up in the lung.
When fitting the piercing, the metal bar can damage a major blood vessel or even damage a a nerve. Any point on the mid-line of your body that’s impacted in a way such as this can have potentially lethal results. Talking to people who’ve undergone this procedure you’ll find some admitting to some discomfort, swelling, temporarily impaired speech, loss of taste, numbness and drooling . Of all the difficulties to be concerned with, chronic infection is the most risky . The tongue is already covered with bacteria. If this bacteria finds its way into your tongue and subsequently your bloodstream it could cause serious infection to your body, resulting in conditions such as Hepatitis or HIV. Infection can also be caused if the piercing instruments haven’t been thoroughly sterilized or are being reused. It’s cool for teenagers (and also some adults) to have their tongue pierced, particularly if their mum and dad become upset by it. If you decide you must have a piercing of any description do your homework and look for a piercing professional with a good reputation .
Since having the metal balls removed he used a Blotting Brush to recover much of the damage done to his gums and teeth . Life sends you what you need when the time is right!
