Is there plaque on your teeth?
If you don’t already know your answer to this, it’s probably „yes“. And if you have plaque, there could be a greater likelihood of developing conditions such as cancer , claims a study that found a direct link between the two.
People with the highest levels of plaque were nearly twice as likely to develop cancer – and, in women, it was most commonly cancer of the breast.
Researchers from Helsinki University found a direct link between amounts of plaque and the associated cancer risk when they looked at oral hygiene and cancer rates in 1,390 people. In their research of 22,000 subjects aged 50 and upwards , they discovered that the test subjects that had a thorough professional dental cleaning within the past year were less likely to have a heart attack over the next 5-7 years.
Why not have a good clean?
While researchers may claim this doesn’t prove that a thorough dental cleaning will reduce your risk, it does corroborate other research with similar results. These researchers do believe that because gum disease is brought on by bacterial infection it will also help to cause a chronic state of inflammation in arteries and blood vessels which have been linked to cardio conditions as well as strokes. As a regular dental cleaning is recommended for your dental health anyway, you might like to make sure you’re getting regular cleanings.
Here’s some quick and reliable health advice
Researchers strongly recommend that people reduce their intake of ‘sports’ drinks. If you absolutely have to drink them, chew sugar-free gum or rinse the mouth with water after you drink them. This helps to increase vital saliva flow, which naturally helps to return the acidity levels in the mouth to normal levels .
The best mouthwash in the world is your own spit
Or you could wait for an hour to brush your teeth after having a sports drink, otherwise, you might spread acid onto the tooth surfaces, increasing the destructive action.
