The Major Factor Of Gum Disease, Bacteria

11.05.2011

Dental diseases are specifically that – separate problems. Two significant issues concerning the teeth are tooth decay and gum disease. While the 2 are different dental problems with different medical treatments, they do correlate on several issues including causal factors and the methods to prevent occurrence.

Tooth Decay

The major causal factor of tooth decay is an unwanted and unnecessary increase of bacteria in the mouth. The excess bacteria attack the teeth, wearing away at the enamel. Over time, a cavity develops. Symptoms of this include a painful toothache. The only way to get rid of the pain is to see the dentist. A visit to him or her usually results in any of the following cures to stop the pain:

*A filling

*A root canal

*An extraction with possibly a replacement tooth, bridge or false teeth in the future

Gum Disease

The major source of gum or periodontal disease is bacteria. It’s important to know that there are facts, and there are a few fallacies about gum disease. Unlike tooth decay, gum disease is divided into 2 related types or phases: gingivitis and periodontitis. The former is milder and is the initial stage of periodontal gum disease. Periodontitis is a more severe form, a progression following the initial gingivitis stage of the disease. It is easier and less painful to treat gingivitis. In the case of periodontitis, advanced problems, such as teeth falling out, reduce the type of remedial treatment available.

Gum disease can place an increased stress upon you. If allowed to continue without treatment, or treated too late, it can increase an individual’s risk of several serious medical problems. These include:

*Stroke

*Diabetes

*Heart disease

*Respiratory issues

*Digestive problems

Commonalities

Gum disease and tooth decay have a common causal factor – bacteria. They also have another aspect in common – they both stem from poor oral hygiene practices. While it is true that some medical issues, genetics and habits such as smoking and poor nutrition or diet may contribute to the susceptibility to these dental problems, at fault is the lack of proper daily dental care.

Prevention

The major way to treat gum disease and tooth decay is to stop it from happening. Anyone can adopt this remedy if he or she establishes and continues on a daily basis a good oral hygiene practice. To be effective, the person must select the right toothbrush to do the job. He or she must also choose the appropriate type of toothpaste and mouthwash. Avoid alcohol-based mouthwash. It will increase the amount of bacterial growth after initially reducing it. Consider using natural toothpaste, such as OraMD or baking soda. These products often double as a breath freshener, toothpaste and mouthwash. Whatever your preference, be sure to follow the same procedure every day. This will prevent incidences of tooth decay and gum disease.

Conclusion

Bacteria are the major cause of both gum disease and tooth decay. It is possible to suffer from only one of these dental issues. You may also have both gum disease and tooth decay simultaneously. While the cures for each differ, the best method of treatment is the same – prevention. Adopt and maintain a viable system of oral hygiene.
