Suggested Treatments For Inflamed Gums

10.06.2011

Inflamed gums are usually one of the initial symptoms of a gum disease, accompanied with chronic bad breath and pain. If you happen to encounter any of these symptoms, you better act fast as these can lead to very serious problems. Gum diseases are mostly caused by bacterial infections due to poor oral hygiene but can be also be influenced by a few other factors.

If you need it gone soon, a dentist may be able to prescribe you with some antibiotics to effectively get rid of the infection. But while you’re waiting for your dentist appointment, you may try these home remedies to provide temporary or possibly long term relief to treat inflamed gums. Who knows, if things go well, you may even need to cancel that appointment.

Saline water or a mixture of salt and warm water is one good home remedy and is a popular solution for providing instant temporary relief for inflamed gums. The heat will promote blood circulation and the healing benefits of salt will prevent further infection and speed up the recovery process. Alternatively, you can add some baking soda as it has similar healing properties. Doing this several times a day will work wonders on oral problems. You may also opt to gargle using an antiseptic mouthwash – preferably the anti-gingivitis ones that contain hydrogen peroxide or chlorhexidine.

To reduce swelling, you can also apply some ice on the affected areas. This is most useful for providing quick relief by numbing the affected gums. This will not have any antibacterial benefits however so ensure it is followed by proper oral health care.

There are also several types of remedies you can apply to the inflamed gums to effectively reduce the swelling and get rid of the infection. Some of which include aloe vera gel which has natural healing properties, clove oil which is a popular home solution to dental problems due to its antiseptic properties, and tea tree oil which is both an antiseptic and healing boost.

On top of these home-made solutions, maintaining an excellent dental care routine is essential to ensure your teeth and gums are healthy and disease free. This will not only include brushing and flossing but also involve doing both practices properly. Gums are very sensitive and thus, overly aggressive brushing or flossing will just help aggravate the inflammation so make sure that you do so as gentle as possible without missing any surface.
