Teeth grinding (also known as bruxism) is a condition wherein a person clenches his teeth and grinds it while in slumber. It’s an extraordinary condition because patients unconsciously inflict damage upon themselves, this is why professionals are still unaware of the actual causes which.

The condition may be easily diagnosed, however treating it or making the patient stop teeth grinding is a different challenge because of the lack of facts. The only good thing about bruxism is that it does not mean life or death. But it in severe cases, it has shown to affect the teeth, gums, jaws and even the face, however these cases are rare.

One thing about grinding teeth at night is that it is done subconsciously, so no matter how hard a victim tries to stop teeth grinding, he simply won’t be able to do so. It would be the same thing as asking someone to not dream in their sleep. It can become very hard for the spouse of someone who grinds their teeth at night to get a good sleep as the sound of grinding teeth is quite annoying. You could compare teeth grinding to snoring in the way that it happens while sleeping and it can very easily disrupt your spouses sleeping pattern..

Patients can use a dental mouth guard for grinding teeth when they go to sleep in order to stop teeth grinding. A mouth guard does not stop the actual action of grinding teeth but it will keep you teeth from touching and grinding against each other. And of course your spouse will be happy as the sound of grinding teeth will be no more. However, this is not a good way to address the problem because it only addresses the symptoms. The individual will still end up clenching his jaws which can result to pain and tightening of the jaw muscles. Sleeping with a mouth guard for the first time can be quite annoying.

OK so how to stop grinding teeth is a good question? Dental professionals believe that to cure bruxism they must first uncover the true cause behind the condition. This condition is triggered by suppressed emotions, frustration and stress. What make matters worse is that these causes are not easily addressed, it takes time before these things start to heal. So until the root cause is addressed, tell the victim not to get stressed out to much and to keep the mouth guard on.
