Gum disease is a serious and prevalent condition that affects roughly about 80% of adults. It is characterized by gum inflammation and oral bleeding. This can advance to more chronic levels that can result in bone decay, loss of connective tissue and even tooth loss.  To maintain good oral health, the best offense is a good defense. Having regular visits to the dentist and using good toothpaste can lessen the risk of having gum disease. It was found that there are certain foods and plant compounds shown to have a positive effect on oral health.

It was found that both calcium and Vitamin C have strong associations with oral health. People who do not consume adequate amounts of calcium and Vitamin C each day are at significantly higher risk for gum disease. Calcium helps strengthen bone mass beneath the gum line which minimize bone decay from bacteria.  Vitamin C helps reduce the periodontal pockets that harbor harmful bacteria, keeping periodontal disease from progressing and can also alleviate symptoms in people with periodontal disease because of its anti-inflammatory properties. To manage gum disease, it is best to eat calcium rich foods such as dairy, leafy green vegetables and fortified foods can guard your mouth against bone loss. Oranges, papaya, bell peppers, strawberries, broccoli and cauliflower are foods with high concentrations of Vitamin C.

Folic acid can also strengthen one’s oral defenses. A lot of studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of folic acid in preserving gum tissue and reducing the risk of gingivitis and periodontitis. It has the ability to improve gingivitis symptoms, reduce gum tissue’s inflammatory response, and make gum tissue more resilient to irritants such as bacteria and plaque. Folic acid has been clinically tested in mouthwash solutions where it showed significant improvement after four weeks of using a folic acid mouthwash.

The extract of green tea is rich in a class of antioxidants called catechins which helps combat oral plaque and bacteria. The polyphenols of green tea works as an as anti-plaque agents by suppressing glucosyl transferase, which oral bacteria use to feed on sugar. Another research has demonstrated that green tea extract can kill oral bacteria and inhibit collagenase activity, a natural enzyme that becomes overactive in the presence of bacterial overgrowth, can destroy healthy collagen in gum tissue. Green tea extract has also been found to inhibit Streptococcus mutans bacteria when applied topically. This bacterium has been implicated in the development of dental caries, the decay and breaking down of teeth and their bone support.

While a nutritious diet nutritious diet rich in calcium, Vitamin C and folic acid can help protect against gum disease, diligent hygiene is also important. In preventing or reversing gum disease, it is still very important to brush and floss daily and a regular visit to the dentist for cleaning.
