Plagued by knee problems, goalkeeper Alimin Mohamed thought his expert soccer career was over when he suffered not 1, but two significant knee injuries. But tenacity along with a caring team of physicians and physiotherapists quickly got him back on the area.
When football followers view Tampines Rovers goalie Alimin Mohamed darting around on the pitch in his signature #14 jersey, most are probably unaware that he has a knee full of screws and metal plates.
The objective keeper of Singapore’s top football club initial joined the higher profile football club’s youth academy at 14. Moving as much as the Prime League, he was just 19 when he suffered his initial knee injury.
„As the Tampines Stadium football pitch was undergoing maintenance then, the group trained in the area just outdoors the stadium. Unfortunately, I stepped right into a pothole. I believed I’d just twisted my ankle but I heard a loud pop from my correct knee. That evening, it swelled up and was so painful I could hardly stroll,“ recalled Alimin, now 27, about that fateful day in November 2003.
Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Injury
The next morning, he consulted orthopaedic surgeon Dr Tho Kam San at Mount Alvernia Hospital. A well-known title amongst local sportsmen, Dr Tho is also the team doctor for your nationwide soccer group. Dr Tho delivered the poor news: Alimin had entirely torn his Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL), the primary tissue holding the joints within the knee with each other. He would need reconstructive surgical procedure and it might be a minimum of six months to eight months prior to he might be back around the area. The doctor also cautioned that complete recovery was not assured either. „It was my first yr within the Prime League and also the starting of my professional football profession. I was utterly depressed at this significant setback,“ recalled Alimin.
Alimin informed himself that his very best bet was to cooperate with the doctor and preserve his mental strength. „Dr Tho saw just how much I desired to get back on the field and scheduled the operation for your very next day.“ During the four-hour surgical procedure, one of the hamstrings in Alimin’s left thigh was utilized to replace the ACL within the correct knee.
Intensive Sports Physiotherapy
Intensive rehabilitation followed instantly. „Every day for two, 3 hrs, I’d be at Mount Alvernia’s Rehabilitation Centre. There, Senior Sports activities Physiotherapist Fairuuz bin Saleh started with cold and present therapy on his knee for a fortnight to cut back the swelling. He then guided Alimin to do leg presses to construct up his left thigh muscle.
„The discomfort was so excellent, I needed to hold back my tears,“ grimaced Alimin, „but I persevered because I desired to perform football once more.“ After getting the green light from Dr Tho, he doubled his rehab efforts, once with his physiotherapist in the morning along with a 2nd session swimming or cycling at the fitness center within the afternoon. It paid off. Just 4 months later on, Alimin was back in training and chasing his soccer dream.
Even though his correct knee had entirely recovered, Alimin created a phobia. „I was so afraid I’d hurt it again, I couldn’t carry out my very best. 2004 was the lowest point in my career. I played some games but nearly did not make it to the group the next year,“ admitted Alimin. „Thankfully, my coach and team mates did not give up on me and spurred me on.“ Daily, besides two-hour coaching sessions with his team, Alimin also hit the fitness center. Dr Tho also advised him to take glucosamine supplements to strengthen his joints.
By 2006, Alimin was on leading of his game once more. Appointed captain from the Prime League group, he guided them to win second location and was even promoted to the S League group. Then in December 2009, around the extremely first day of the pre-season coaching, disaster struck again.
Another Torn Ligament!
„I stretched out for a ball and landed awkwardly. This time, even though there was no pain or swelling, I knew from my prior experience that I’d injured my right knee once more.“ Dr Tho confirmed his worst worry; Alimin had torn 80% of the whole ligament and would require surgery once more. This time, he had to use a synthetic patella tendon as „I’d run from hamstrings I could use,“ he explained.
Suffering an ACL injury injury twice often spells the end of the sportsman’s career. But the tenacious Alimin refused to give up. Operating closely with his physiotherapist, they tackled his daily rehab having a vengeance. After two months, Alimin progressed to jogging. Their concerted effort paid off beautifully. In just 3 and a half months, Dr Tho pronounced him fit for your area again.
Since then, Alimin has been playing at his highest level yet. Last yr, the Tampines Rovers won the S-League and toured Maldives, Vietnam, Thailand and Iraq, which makes it to the quarter finals from the Asian Football Federation. Known as towards the area in the final 30 minutes – ironically because the first goalkeeper suffered an ACL injury – Alimin stopped objective after goal in the Iraqi team. It was one of his finest performances however.
Sadly, throughout additional time, the Singapore group scored an own goal and also the Iraqis won 1-0. Alimin was disappointed but there was a bitter-sweet consolation. „My coach Steven Tan informed me that I’d done a great occupation and that he did not expect that from me as I’d replaced our objective keeper, a key player on the group, in the last minute,“ shared Alimin with quiet pride.
Effective Rehabilitation
Tapping at his right knee, he declared, „I’m so thankful I can make a comeback in my profession because Dr Tho effectively operated on my knee twice. I also want to express my gratitude to my physiotherapist Fairuuz who pushed me to my limits to help me bounce back even stronger,“ said Alimin, who also credited his family, coach and group mates“ faith in him as driving forces.
I’ve benefited from the care at Mount Alvernia Hospital more than the final eight years and I truly value the incredible services. Everyone I’ve met continues to be extremely skilled and knowledgeable about my situation, and very patient with me. On the day of my discharge, they sent me out on the wheelchair as well as carried me in to the vehicle! They do not just say goodbye following you sign the discharge form! I frequently see them send newborn babies out to the vehicles also!“ said an impressed Alimin.
When told that it is a unique Mount Alvernia tradition, Alimin smiled, „That’s one factor about Mount Alvernia Hospital that is different in the rest. Here, they truly take care of you like you are their kid.“
