The advent of bisphosphonate was once a medical breakthrough which would benefit millions of people who are suffering or at risk of suffering from osteoporosis. Unfortunately, the recent past was not a good era for these drugs as more complaints against them arise; in fact a bisphosphonate review was published in a preliminary event from an FDA (the Food and Drug Administration) Advisory meeting. It is dispiriting to imagine that these patients who resolve in taking these drugs for treatment ended up in a whole new ordeal considering that some of them may have developed their osteoporosis from another disease condition.
It is not a wonder why many people succumb into this bone-debilitating illness. In addition to the risk factors that would encompass almost anyone, there are several diseases which could complicate into this brittle bone disease. Checking the status of your bones might be a good idea if you are suffering from any of these diseases.
Autoimmune disorders like Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) and Lupus
Autoimmune diseases arise from an overactive immune response to a substance that is not foreign to the body. Medical management of RA and Lupus usually includes steroids which may be prescribed over a long duration. One of the side effects of steroids is bone loss (although the disease RA itself may also cause a decrease of bone density) hence, it may largely contribute to the development of osteoporosis.
Digestive and Gastrointestinal disorders
Diseases like celiac disease and inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) namely Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis may cause bone loss. This is mainly due to inability of the body to properly absorb nutrients like vitamin D and calcium. Similar to what happens to patients who underwent gastric bypass procedure where the structure may be altered.
Endocrine/Hormonal Disorders
People suffering from diabetes are also at high risk of developing osteoporosis and type 1 in particular seems to have the greatest amount of bone loss. Dysfunctions of endocrine system like hyperparathyroidism and hyperthyroidism may negatively affect your bone mass. Abnormalities in the levels of sex hormones i.e. estrogen and testosterone may have harmful effects on your bones.
Aside from those listed above, there are still more diseases that may predispose one to this brittle bone disease. Those people going through this conditions need not have to endure more problems like the adverse effects of osteoporosis medication like Fosamax. In the news are people contending for a Fosamax femur fracture lawsuit because of the alleged harmful effects of the drug but we know for sure that these people never wanted to dwell on those problems in the first place.
