Did you know that by teaching children how to take good care of their teeth can spare them from having gum problems? Once they are trained and thought of the importance of their teeth and gums, children will see the value of brushing and flossing. Children love to mimic adults around them like their mommy, daddy, older siblings and even their nanny.  What they see adults are doing, guaranteed they want to try it too.

It doesn’t a formal schooling to teach them the important things they need to learn at home. How do we educate children about gum disease?

Introduce Gum disease.  Give examples to children like when they feel that their gums are swelling and bleeding when brushing their teeth. It is a sign of gingivitis which is the first stage of gum disease. Explain to them that these symptoms will only occur when they neglect to brush their teeth at least twice a day. That the worst thing that could happen to them is lose their teeth.

Stress the Importance of Proper Brushing and Flossing. Tell them that it is good that they know how to brush their teeth. However, it is even better if they know the proper way to do it. Improper way of brushing ones teeth may worsen the disease.  It is because gum disease starts when during the plaque build up. Make sure to provide soft-bristled toothbrush. If you have observed that you kids teeth are sensitive you can also buy toothpaste for sensitive teeth. Alternatively while they are still young, you can give them flavored toothpaste so that they will enjoy brushing their teeth. Some kids dislike the taste of mind in their mouth. As a result, they avoid brushing their teeth.

Regular Visit to the Dentist.  It is normal when kids get scared during their first visit with a professional dentist. However, if you explain to them that dentists are there to help them and make them more beautiful or handsome. You can also bring them with you when you visit your dentist for a check up.

When you give your children ideas about gum disease and its effect on their lives they will learn to take an action. Make sure to explain that you do not mean to scare them; however you want to let them know that this could happen to them. Furthermore, be a good example. They will follow your actions and will have their own style in time.
