How To Prevent Dentistry Disasters

22.08.2011

Budding dentists spend eight or more years in college learning about problems involving teeth, the dental procedures and how to diagnose the problems. Thus we often believe that simply because they have a lot of years of learning behind them, they can hardly go wrong. Yet you can find many cases reported where some or another dental procedure has gone horribly wrong and the patients died or gotten permanently scarred. Thus we have to remember that dentists are after all humans and they are prone to making mistakes.

The Dental Procedures That Can Go Wrong

As we may know, the root canal is a typical dental procedure and many individuals will get it done without having a hitch. Yet we have seen cases where the treatment had gone wrong and resulted in the patients ending up experiencing bruising, jaw swelling and pain.

Similarly, tooth extraction is a very common procedure. Since quite a few patients are not at ease with the extraction, many dentists prefer using general anesthesia that will put the patients to sleep during the tooth surgery. While many of them will usuallywake up once the surgery is completed, some cases reported show that there have been patients who definitely have died after slipping right into a coma.

It’s the same with orthodontics. Statistics tell that eighty percent of teenagers need to wear braces. Again the majority of them put them on without any difficulty, but some have experienced mouth swelling and pain.

Pediatric Dentistry Ending in Disaster: Real World Examples

It’s a sad case that lots of the victims of dental procedures happen to be children. A girl from Chicago, only five years old, died in 2006 after caps and fillings were put on her teeth. It transpired that the reason of the death had been how the dentist had applied three times the normal dose of sedative. A lawsuit was filed against the dentist plus the court revoked his license to administer general anesthesia permanently. The family was paid damages, but they lost their daughter, a loss that could so easily have been avoided.

Another incident happened in Virginia only this past year. A 6 year-old boy went into cardiac arrest as the dentist was putting caps on his teeth. He was declared dead soon after being brought to the hospital. Besides asthma, the boy had not had any major health problem. Investigation on the case is still on and no charges has been filed yet.

The Best Way To Go Safe With Dentistry

Most of the qualified dentists are competent professionals and know their job. Yet you must continually be mindful of the reality that things may take a wrong turn in a dental procedure. To be as safe as you can, it’s always far better to choose a board-certified dentist with some good experience under his belt.

These are facinating points we wrote in our post, but it isn’t the only place to find this information.  We have found other places like this one about small businesses that you might find useful too.  Why don’t you share it socially too!
