Home Remedies For Red Gums

Your gums’ color can be indicative of your overall dental health.  Healthy gums are pink are naturally pink and shiny.  On the other hand, red gums could signify irritated gums, or worse, bacterial infection.  When bacteria levels are higher than normal, it attacks your gum tissues and bones surrounding your teeth.  When not attended to immediately, it could lead to other serious dental problems such as periodontitis or teeth loss.  If you feel like you have red gums problem, seeking dental advice is the best thing you can do.  Your dentist may be able to diagnose the underlying condition that causes inflammation on your gums and can prescribe some medication.

However, a dentist may not always be available all the time.  So while waiting for your dental appointment, you may want to resort to some home remedies which could alleviate the discomfort brought by red gums.  For starters, you may want to reduce your stress level. Recent studies show that stress can aggravate existing conditions, including gum infection.

Some of the best ways to relieve stress is through exercise, eating healthy and living healthy.  This may not remove bacteria and plaque but this helps by not worsening the symptoms of bacterial infection.  It also helps in the healing process of a gum infection.

To soothe the pain associated with red gums and gum infection, you can rub aloe vera gel on you’re gums.  You can purchase aloe vera capsules from the drug store or health store, or you can get the gel from the plant leaf.  Tea is also a good analgesic and antiseptic.  Lemon and peppermint are good choices for natural tea.  Just boil a pot of hot water and place a slice of fresh lemon or some peppermint leaves in the pot.  Allow it to simmer and cool a little bit before drinking the mixture.  You can allow the mixture to stay in your mouth before swallowing.

Maintaining a good dental health practice can also alleviate the infection and keep the bacteria level in check until the day of the dentist appointment.  Use a soft-bristled toothbrush so as not to damage and hurt your already sensitive gums.  You may also want to steer clear of commercial toothpastes and mouthwash as they contain harsh chemicals which can irritate your gums and leave your mouth dry.  Opt for salt water gargles and baking soda instead as a substitute for your regular toothpaste and toothbrush.  You can also use warm lemon juice or unsweetened cranberry juice as mouthwash as both have antiseptic qualities.
