The young and the restless have a penchant for extremes and adventure. Their level of activity is usually high and they believe they are invincible. You see them participating in sports and activities providing adrenaline rush. With all those mentioned, injuries can happen anytime. Hip injuries may be one of those that they’ll suffer from and this usually needs hip replacement surgery. Active individuals may have better chances post-surgery than those that are obese because obesity leads to dangerous hip replacement surgical complications. Aside from that, hip devices used in the surgery may also pose a threat like that of DePuy Pinnacle.
Overview on Hip Replacement
Hip Replacement or Total Hip Replacement (THR) is a surgery done so the injured portion of the hips, commonly the joints, are removed and replaced with prosthetic devices. Its purpose is to relieve the individual from pain and improve or resume the functional ability of the hips. Generally, this is done in elder adults over the age of 60 due to arthritis and other degenerative diseases but according to statistics, more young people are having the surgery because of sports injuries and active lifestyle. Approximately 5-10% of total hip replacement surgeries as of 2002 were done on patients younger than 50 according to The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), and numbers are increasing over the years. With this development, companies making hip prostheses are creating products with the younger population as their target. DePuy Orthopaedics introduced Pinnacle, a metal-on-metal hip replacement system that is for younger patients seeking an active lifestyle post-surgery. However, there have been complaints filed against the said device for reportedly failing prematurely that resulted to debilitating conditions that greatly disrupt the life of the patient.
Recall on DePuy Pinnacle, a Possibility
As stated, most of those who had DePuy Pinnacle as an implant suffered a lot post-surgery. The device was reportedly designed to be more durable than others but reports say otherwise. Patients reported that the device loosens up just a few years after the surgical procedure and may lead to several complications that may interfere with daily activities such as difficulty in straightening the legs, leaning forward, and anything that may require pressure on the affected area. For patients with severely loosened implants, a revision surgery is important so the problem will be fixed. Not to mention, the sufferer may also be developing metal toxicity as the metal particles in the device may entire the bloodstream and this is rather serious when left untreated. A number of over 50 affected individuals have now filed a case against the manufacturers and a DePuy Pinnacle recall may be requested in the near future.
