More and more people are choosing to have their dentistry outside of their home country because the procedures are not only cheaper, but they can combine a holiday with their treatment.
From breast augmentation to dental implants, from gender selection to stem cell treatment, more and more people are turning to countries like China, India and Thailand for their medical treatment.
In 2008, the World Health Organisation (WHO) says the value added from medical tourism in Thailand amounted to around 0.4% of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP), with the value add predicted to reach up to 110 billion baht in 2012. Thailand is actually becoming one of the premier destinations when it comes to dentistry overseas, with an estimated 2 million people choosing it for their treatment during the past year.
Why Thailand?
Dentistry in Thailand is cheap, the treatment is of the highest quality and the level of care provided is excellent, which makes it a first-choice destination for many people. The doctors are highly qualified (many of whom hold degrees from Western universities), the technology at the dental hospitals (eg Bumrungrad hospital) is cutting edge and strict hygiene regimes are maintained, waiting lists are virtually non-existent and of course, there’s always the option of having an extended exotic holiday at the same time as having dental treatment!.
There’s also generally no communication issues as many of the professionals involved in dentistry overseas are fluent in English.
It’s no wonder more and more people are seeking affordable alternatives for their specialised dentistry… Thailand, India, Mexico, South Africa, Costa Rica….the list of destinations reads like an enticing travel brochure.
