Fosamax Femur Fracture Lawyers are encouraged by a newly published study by the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) that shows Fosamax having a direct link to atypical Femur Fractures.
JAMA’s February 2011 issue published a study entitled “Bisphosphonate Use and the Risk of Subtrochanteric or Femoral Shaft Fractures in Older Women”. This study shows that there is long term risks of taking Bisphophonate, which are drugs designed to treat osteoporosis, this includes Fosamax. The publication also shows that women aged over 68 and have been Fosamax for over 5 years have about a 3 percent high chance of suffering from a femoral shaft fracture than those who used the drugs for fewer than 100 days.
One other result the study showed is that the Bisphophonate family, which include: Foxamax (made by Merck & Co.), Boniva (Roche), and Reclast (Novartis Pharmaceuticals), has the potential to cause atypical femur fractures. An atypical fracture is a fracture that occurs from little or no trauma to the bone. In the May/June 2008 issue of Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma reports find that more than one-third of patients who suffered a femoral stress fracture resulting from a low-energy impact (a fall from standing height or less) had been on a Fosamax prescription for an average of four years.
These studies have lead to 100 cases to be filed by those injured by Fosamax, these cases claim that Fosamax manufacturer, Merck & Co., failed to do the correct amount of research on the drug as well give proper warning to its consumers about the potentially dangerous side effects of the drug. The cases that have been made against Merck that have to do with jaw bone death have already been placed in Multidistrict Litigation in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey since 2006, one bellwether trail has already been finished in regards to this. Femur Fracture complaints however, have been purposely separated from the jaw bone death claims since the types of injures being claim are extremely different.
