Fosamax And Drug Interactions

28.08.2012

Back in the early 1990s, hormone drug therapy used to be the conventional preventive treatment for the potential health risks of post-menopause in older women, medical experts say. It was not until after five years into the decade that the first osteoporosis drug, popular by the name Fosamax, has been approved and dispensed into the consumer market. However, in addition to reasonably preventable drug interactions, Merck and Company’s blockbuster drug has eventually been linked to serious side effects as it has gained popularity over the past 10 years. Fosamax-related osteonecrosis of the jaw, as it has been called by many medical experts, belongs to the list.

Various types of treatments have evolved dramatically with different medications now accessible from doctors or pharmacies. But as a person ages, he or she may either be healthy or fortunate enough to have not developed any disease later in adulthood. In most cases, older adults have been at the receiving end of different health conditions, seeing multiple care providers, and taking one or more medications – a practice which may invite more potential health complications from drug interactions.

A drug interaction may be experienced when a patient takes multiple medications simultaneously, or within short intervals of the occasion, as cited by medical journals. It may interfere with how a person’s body reacts to a medication, render the medicines less effective, or in some cases, more potent.  It may intervene with how the body may react to the medication, alter its effect, make the drug less effective, or in some events, more potent. As were other formulations, Fosamax as an osteoporosis drug may also interact and produce negative reactions when taken altogether with other medications.

Patients who may be taking Fosamax may have an increased risk of stomach and intestinal side effects as a negative reaction upon taking aspirin and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Food and beverages (except water) may affect how the body may absorb alendronate, while Fosamax may be rendered less effective when taken with calcium, iron, and magnesium supplementations. Before taking another medication, doctors recommend that patients wait for a minimum of 30 minutes after taking Fosamax.

Drug interactions may bring about potentially serious physical repercussions, and may cause further health risks. Patients are encouraged to fully inform their prescribing clinicians with their complete medical history and any medication they may be previously or currently taking to possibly minimize the risk of added health problems from drug interactions.
