Who can forget “Fixodent and Forget it!” the famous catch phrase of the denture cream Fixodent? Unfortunately those who have suffered from neurological damaged due the zinc contained in Fixodent can’t. The damaged caused by Fixodent is the reason why people across the United States are seeking out a class action Fixodent Lawsuit.
Recently a Sacramento lawyer filed an intended class action lawsuit against Fixodent Manufacturer Procter & Gamble on behalf of those who have been injured due to the over exposure to Fixodent The two biggest claims of the lawsuit are that Procter and Gamble failed to warn its customer about the Zinc in their product and the dangerous side effects of the zinc as well. Zinc has been an active component in several denture creams since the 90’s and is potentially dangerous in the wrong amounts; possible injuries include: the side effects include nerve damage, lifelong disability, and even death. The lawyer also claims “Our clients are in walkers, they’re in wheelchairs, places they never thought they would be. We have three clients that have passed away since we started litigating.” It got so bad for one plaintiff Sandra Hankins, from Arkansas who used Fixodent to secure her dentures said that, “I thought I was going to die because my body was shutting down.”
The cases are hoping to make Procter & Gamble remove zinc from their product in addition to the monetary compensation. They claim that Fixodent can be made with a material that is not zinc and will keep the same function.
The competitor of Procter & Gamble, GlaxoSmithKline (maker of Poligrip), has also been targeted by class action lawsuits, has already removed zinc from the Poligrip formula. GSK states that as of February 2010 that it had “become aware of potential health problems associated with the long-term excessive use of our zinc-containing denture adhesive products.”
It would take long term and heavy use of a denture cream containing zinc for the signs of neurological damage to show, and according to P&G representative Tricia Gottlieb “The amount of zinc an average denture adhesive user would ingest from daily usage of Fixodent is less than the amount of zinc in most daily multi-vitamins and comparable to 6 oz. ground beef.” This does not alter the fact that Procter & Gamble failed to give any warning about the dangers of zinc in its products and its side effects.
For those injured by the over exposure to zinc, you do have rights. The fact of the matter is that the denture cream manufacturers will be held responsible for the damage they have caused by having zinc in their product.
