how to get rid of yellow teeth

The reasons for yellow teeth differ for each person. Some people are born with a natural yellow look to their teeth and other people have teeth which have become stained over time.

What a lot of people don’t realise is that not all people start off with shiny bright teeth. The normal colour of a group of peoples teeth is more naturally yellowish than white because of a slim or opaque layer of enamel covering their teeth. The normal colour of the internal part of the tooth is yellowish. The inside tooth material is called Dentin. If have a family history of yellow teeth, then you may be genetically prone to have thin or translucent enamel and will have always had yellowish teeth.

Another way of having natural yellow teeth is growing older. As we age our enamel layer breaks down because of good old use. As we go through life eating and drinking. we gradually wear down the enamel layer which protects our teeth.  The underlying Dentin layer becomes more visible and we become more susceptible to stained teeth as well.

One of the major causes of yellow teeth is lack of oral hygeine. Inevitably you will get a build up of staining food particles if you don’t brush your teeth regularly. These food particles stain the outside of the enamel and also erode the enamel coating causing the yellow colour of the Dentin to become visible. Lack of oral hygeine creates the perfect breeding ground for germs to exist and can lead to a variety of mouth diseases and infections which, if left unchecked, will rapidly erode the protective enamel layer.

Yellow or stained teeth are mainly due to consumption of staining foods, beveridges and other staining substances like nicotene. Consumption of tobacco through either smoking or eating is a sure fire way to get yellow teeth. Nicotine found in cigarettes and chewing tobacco discolours the teeth, lips and fingers and is quite difficult to remove. Always be careful of consuming mustard, turmeric, blueberries, blackberries, carrots, oranges, apples and potatoes. All these foods have staining qualities and some have acidic reactions to the protective enamel layer. Certainly acidic elements such as citrus fruits and vinegar readily break down enamel. Coffee, tea, cola and red wine also break down enamel and gradually stain your teeth.

There are a few not so common causes of yellow teeth. A fall or accident affecting the teeth may cause cracking of the tooth enamel and make access available for germs and staining agents to penetrate and deposit within the tooth. Medications such as antibiotics (tetracycline and doxycycline) discolour and stain teeth. Medical cancer treatments like chemotherapy also stain and yellow the teeth. Using some blood pressure tablets, antihistamines and anti psychotic medications can also play a major role in creating yellow or stained teeth.

In nearly all these cases you will find that teeth whitening is the most used solution to creating white teeth at an affordable price. Click here for teeth whitening tips or more information regarding yellow teeth
