An Online Pharmacy Or A High Street Pharmacy?

06.08.2011

As the internet has continued to grow at an exponential rate, the way business is conducted has experienced a change. More and more commerce is conducted online, as it is quite simple to purchase a product with the click of a button and never have to leave the home. Almost any product you can think of may be bought on the information superhighway, including vehicles and even medicine. A trip to the local pharmacy was once a way of life, but now online pharmacies are gaining in relative popularity to the traditional brick and mortar stores. There is something to be said for both, so what are the advantages and disadvantages of each?

One of the most apparent advantages of buying drugs via an online pharmacy is the convenience of shopping from your house. The internet never closes its doors, and if an ailment arises at an odd hour, a walk to the computer enables you to instantly purchase some medicine. There is a disadvantage to this, however. Even though your purchase will go through, there may not be someone to help answer your questions outside of normal business hours. You may have some concerns about what medicine best treats what is bothering you, but many online pharmacies only provide support during typical working hours.

High street pharmacies provide the support that online pharmacies lack. Within a physical store or hospital, a licensed pharmacist is employed who can answer questions someone has about certain drugs. The issue with online support staffs is that the person on the other end cannot physically see you. Many times it is simpler to converse with someone face-to-face, because the communication gap is smaller.

Stocking problems are far less of an issue at online pharmacies than in physical stores. Online pharmacies are able to stock, in some cases, three times more units of a particular medicine because they simply have to ship from a warehouse. High street pharmacies may be out of stock of a drug in one location but have it at another; however that creates a lot of running around on the patient’s part.

Much of an online pharmacy’s appeal is derived from convenience; however, they are not able to offer the face-to-face advice from a licensed pharmacist that many enjoy. What a high street pharmacy does not stock, an online pharmacy might, so the patient must weigh shipping fees against using his or her own gasoline and determine which is the route to take.
