All About Flossing Your Teeth

19.04.2012

Flossing is very important. Not only can it help you clean out the bacteria and food from in between your teeth, but it is a key tool in preventing gum disease. When improving your oral health, using a braun electric toothbrush is a really good thing to start with, bbut flossing needs to be done on a daily basis too in order for to maintain healthy teeth. The plaque bacteria which clings in the nooks and crannies between the teeth, and on the gumline, can easily be removed with a little flossing.

If you don’t get rid of plaque bacteria on a regular basis, it may lead to dental problems or even life threatening illnesses. For example, one of the byproducts of this bacteria is excess acid. This acid is what is usually responsible for eating away at tooth enamel and causing cavities. Another by product of plaque bacteria is a foul smelling sulphur compound, which commonly causes bad breath and halitosis.

Whenever we eat, small food particles get caught in our teeth, and this is what allows plaque bacteria to thrive in our mouthes. If not remove, it will harden and turn into tartar over time, which is impossible to remove through normal brushing and will need to be scraped off by your dentist.

Next, we’ll take a look at how to floss properly.

1) Snap off an 18 inch piece of dental floss and secure it to your middle fingers by wrapping the ends around them.

2) Get the floss to enter in between your teeth by employing a gentle rocking motion with your fingers

3) When the floss gets to your gumline, gently slide it between your tooth and gum by curving the floss in a C shape against your tooth

4) Gently move the floss up and down to remove the plaque from your gum.

That’s all you need to do. Repeat the process as required, taking each tooth one at a time. Remember, you must be gentle when flossing. Don’t ever use a sawing back and forth motion when you floss as this can cause serious injury.
