These trials stem from the fact that denture cream zinc has been linked to neuropathy by a number of studies that also concluded that excessive levels of zinc can cause a copper deficiency which can damage nerve cells. For many years the The major denture cream manufacturers failed for many years to list zinc as a major component of their product, as well warn their consumers of the dangerous side effects of zinc over exposure. Warnings are required by law to be labeled on the packaging of any denture creams that contain zinc. The FDA recently recommended as well that Procter & Gamble and GlaxoSmithKline, makers of Fixodent and Poligrip respectively, reformulate their denture creams to exclude zinc. Although GSK has already begun this by reformulating Super Poligrip, Procter & Gamble have yet responded claiming that their denture adhesive is safe when used as directed, and has improved product labeling to ensure that users understand how to properly apply it.
